Virus Day @ 3rd OCT 2018

Virus, Bacteria, Germs, Microbiology

“VIRUS”… Not such a pleasant word right. We always believe that viruses are pathogens that invade our body. Most of the diseases around are caused by viruses. Viruses are present everywhere even in the air you breath.

We often get confused between bacteria and a virus. A big difference is that bacteria are living things while viruses are considered to be non living. Got a shock? But when viruses attack or invade a host cell they are called to be living because they can reproduce at that time.

How were viruses discovered? In 1884, the French microbiologist Charles Chamberland invented a filter, known today as the Chamberland filter or Chamberland–Pasteur filter that has pores smaller than bacteria. Thus he could pass a solution containing bacteria through the filter and completely remove them from the solution. In the early 1890s the Russian biologist Dmitri Ivanovsky used this filter to study what became known as the tobacco mosaic virus. At the same time several other scientists proved that, although these agents (later called viruses) were different from bacteria, they could still cause disease, and they were about one hundredth the size of bacteria. In 1899 the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck observed that the agent multiplied only in dividing cells.

Now you might be thinking, how to celebrate a virus day. Again like usual, I would tell you to spread awareness about viruses and prevent them from making you their home. These are things we all know but they are ignored. So I urge you to follow them. Wash your hand before every meal. Take vaccinations. Avoid contact with people that are sick as they may be contagious and soon. This list goes on forever. Still many people do not follow even one.

That's all for today....Stay Clean, Stay healthy....HAPPY VIRUS DAY!!!!!!
